National Hispanic Heritage Month Sep 15 - Oct 15

"The Library of Congress, National Archives and Records Administration, National Endowment for the Humanities, National Gallery of Art, National Park Service, Smithsonian Institution and United States Holocaust Memorial Museum join in paying tribute to the generations of Hispanic Americans who have positively influenced and enriched our nation and society."

"The observation started in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson and was expanded by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 to cover a 30-day period starting on September 15 and ending on October 15. It was enacted into law on August 17, 1988, on the approval of Public Law 100-402.

The day of September 15 is significant because it is the anniversary of independence for Latin American countries Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on September 16 and September18, respectively. Also, Columbus Day or Día de la Raza, which is October 12, falls within this 30 day period."

Rise, Serve, Lead! America’s Women Physicians

From NLM Launches a New Exhibition  03/05/2019 10:23 AM EST

"The U.S. National Library of Medicine (NLM) announces Rise, Serve, Lead! America’s Women Physicians, a banner exhibition and companion online adaptation. The exhibition opens March 18, 2019 in commemoration of Women’s History Month.

Rise, Serve, Lead! highlights the lives and achievements of over 300 women physicians who have made a difference through their medical practice and research, work as activists, service as administrators, and mentorship to the next generation of physicians. It presents a selection of the physician biographies featured in the 2003 NLM exhibition Changing the Face of Medicine: Celebrating America’s Women Physicians, showcasing the work of these doctors to connect to a contemporary audience.

The online adaptation of Rise, Serve, Lead! includes an education component featuring a new K-12 lesson plan and a digital gallery of works from NLM Digital Collections. These books and journal articles were authored by some of the doctors profiled in the exhibition and give a view into both their scientific research and experiences in a male-dominated field."

"This week, the National Library of Medicine introduces Medicine on Screen: Films and Essays from NLM, a curated, freely-accessible portal presenting digitized historical titles from the Library’s world-renowned audiovisuals collection. An original essay accompanies each film, exploring the social, cultural, and medical milieu of the work, as well as cinematic techniques, the agendas of directors or producers, and other contextual details."

"NLM holds one of the world’s largest collections of medical films and videos, spanning more than a century and numbering nearly 40,000 titles. Among these are an estimated 8,000 cataloged titles deemed historically significant. Many are rare; in some cases, NLM holds the only surviving copy."

New Career Readiness Resource

ACC Libraries is excited to announce a new career readiness resource available to our students. 

Please see the excerpted information below, provided by David W. Gardner, Deputy Commissioner for Academic Planning and Policy/Chief Academic Officer, about the Career Readiness Handbook now available from the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board and the Texas Workforce Commission. More information about the handbook and its benefits can be found on this LinkedIn blog post.

The Career Readiness handbook is part of collaborative efforts to help students improve their employability, and supports ongoing, complementary work in both agencies, including Jobs Y’all and the Texas Internship Challenge.

The handbook is designed to guide students of any age through their postsecondary education with the goal of career readiness. It contains activities and resources to help students think about each step toward a career as they move through their degree or certificate programs. The handbook introduces students to the concept of hard skills and soft skills and relates these to program content. It also informs students about the need to participate in co-curricular and extracurricular activities in order to develop skills and have a well-rounded resumé. Internships and apprenticeships are also explored in-depth.

Checking out Textbooks from the Library

Confused about checking out textbooks from the library?

Not all textbooks are available in the library. Most must be purchased from the bookstore or other places. Learn what textbooks you need.

The Support Center Textbook Collection is a special collection of books purchased through a grant by the ACC Student Support Center to assist certain student groups* to gain access to required textbooks.

ONLY these special student groups* have access to the textbooks through the first week of classes.

After the first week of classes [starting the second week of classes], general credit students can checkout textbooks from this collection.
