National Information Literacy Awareness Month

By proclamation of President Barak Obama, October 2009 has been declared National Information Literacy Awareness Month.

"Every day, we are inundated with vast amounts of information. A 24-hour news cycle and thousands of global television and radio networks, coupled with an immense array of online resources, have challenged our long-held perceptions of information management. Rather than merely possessing data, we must also learn the skills necessary to acquire, collate, and evaluate information for any situation."

Summary from the article in Handbook of Texas:
"JUNETEENTH. On June 19 ("Juneteenth"), 1865, Union general Gordon Granger^qv read the Emancipation Proclamation in Galveston, thus belatedly bringing about the freeing of 250,000 slaves in Texas. The tidings of freedom reached slaves gradually as individual plantation owners read the proclamation to their bondsmen over the months following the end of the war. The news elicited an array of personal celebrations, some of which have been described in The Slave Narratives of Texas (1974). The first broader celebrations of Juneteenth were used as political rallies and to teach freed African American^qv about their voting rights. Within a short time, however, Juneteenth was marked by festivities throughout the state, some of which were organized by official Juneteenth committees. "

ACC Update on H1N1 Influenza (Swine Flu)

Austin Community College recognizes there has been substantial media attention directed at the H1N1 influenza (also known as swine flu <http://www.cdc.gov/h1n1flu/key_facts.htm> ). The health and well-being of our community is first and foremost, and we would like to take this opportunity to update you on the ACC response to the present situation.

ACC is part of the regional health and emergency management team that is closely monitoring the H1N1 flu outbreak in Texas (http://www.dshs.state.tx.us/swineflu/default.shtm). There have been no reported cases of H1N1 at ACC. The college continues to observe normal operating hours.

To help keep you informed and up-to-date, ACC has launched an emergency information webpage (www.austincc.edu/emergency) in both English and Spanish <http://www.austincc.edu/emergency/espanol.php> . The college has developed a list of frequently asked questions about H1N1 flu specific to ACC (http://www.austincc.edu/emergency/faq.php). In addition, you will notice posters in key locations reminding you that the best way to stop the spread of flu is to follow the three C's issued by the Texas Department of State Health Services:

. CLEAN: Wash your hands often. Scrub your hands for at least 20 seconds with soap and water or use an alcohol-based hand cleaner.

. COVER: Cover your cough. Use a tissue to cover your mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze. Don't have a tissue? The crook of your elbow will do.

. CONTAIN: Contain germs by steering clear of others who are sick. If you do get sick, stay at home until you're well again so you don't spread more germs.

ACC will continue to monitor the situation and provide important updates.

As you may be aware, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and state and local public health officials are investigating cases of swine influenza in several states including Texas. The Austin Community College District (ACC) is part of the regional health and emergency management team that closely is monitoring the outbreak of swine flu, which also is being referred to as the North American influenza.

ACC wishes to remind you of what you can do to stay healthy such as:

• If you get sick, stay home and limit contact with others.


• Symptoms include sudden fever, body aches and pains, coughing, and fatigue. People with swine flu also may experience a runny nose, sore throat, nausea, vomiting, and/or diarrhea. The majority of patients report mild symptoms and recover fully.
• Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you sneeze or cough. Throw tissue away.
• Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hand cleaners are also effective.
• Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth. Germs spread that way.
• Avoid contact with those who are sick.

ACC will continue to provide updates and communication regarding this influenza.
