LIBRARY SERVICES AND PROGRAMS DURING INTERSESSIONS

The mission of Library Services is to support teaching and learning at Austin Community College by offering Services and Programs that will help faculty and students attain a successful learning experience.

Reference & Research Services

Reference Librarians provide assistance to students at the Highland Campus Library during the intersession.
Chat service provides our students with assistance even when we are closed. The service provided after hours includes librarians who are trained in and are familiar with our resources.

We continue to answer email reference questions when we are closed as well for those who choose not to use Chat services.

As always, the ACC Library Services offers 24/7 access to the Library Web Site with links to such resources as:

• ebooks,
• online library catalog,
• subject guides to resources,
• research guides,
• online tutorials

In Addition:

During intersession phone messages and signage at all library locations are standardized, instructing students on which libraries are open and how best to reach them. Check flyer holders on library doors for "handouts" with hours and directions guiding them to the open campuses.

Student Support Textbook Collection

Confused about checking out textbooks from the library?

Not all textbooks are available in the library. Most must be purchased from the bookstore or other places. Learn what textbooks you need.

The Support Center Textbook Collection is a special collection of books purchased through a grant by the ACC Student Support Center to assist certain student groups* to gain access to required textbooks.

ONLY these special student groups* have access to the textbooks through the first week of classes.

After the first week of classes [starting the second week of classes], general credit students can checkout textbooks from this collection.

The ACC library is a good place to find a quiet place to study by yourself or with a group. If you need a place to study with a group, try one of the library group study rooms. See more information.

These ACC libraries have group study rooms available for currently enrolled ACC students studying together: Cypress (CYP), Elgin (EGN), Eastview (EVC), Hays (HYS), Northridge (NRG), Rio Grande (RGC), Round Rock (RRC), Riverside (RVS), and South Austin (SAC).

As of 2014, 29.1 million people in the United States, or 9.3 percent of the population, have diabetes. One in four people with diabetes don’t know they have the disease. An estimated 86 million Americans aged 20 years or older have prediabetes.

Diabetes is a disease that occurs when your blood glucose, also called blood sugar, is too high. Over time, having too much glucose in your blood can cause health problems, such as heart disease, nerve damage, eye problems, and kidney disease. On November 8th, Americans will have the opportunity to exercise the most important responsibility we have in a democracy – our right to vote. Please take some time to review the resources and information listed below. And get out there and VOTE!

Polls are open from 7am to 7pm on November 8th, Election Day. Bring an acceptable form of photo ID.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Breast Cancer Awareness

Other than skin cancer, breast cancer is the most common cancer among American women.

Getting mammograms regularly can lower the risk of dying from breast cancer. The United States Preventive Services Task Force recommends that if you are 50 to 74 years old, be sure to have a screening mammogram every two years. If you are 40 to 49 years old, talk to your doctor about when to start and how often to get a screening mammogram.

Fast Facts About Breast Cancer

• Each year in the United States, more than 200,000 women get breast cancer and more than 40,000 women die from the disease.
• Men also get breast cancer, but it is not very common. Less than 1% of breast cancers occur in men.
• Most breast cancers are found in women who are 50 years old or older, but breast cancer also affects younger women. About 10% of all new cases of breast cancer in the United States are found in women younger than 45 years of age.

What Are the Symptoms?

There are different symptoms of breast cancer, and some people have no symptoms at all. Symptoms can include any change in the size or the shape of the breast, pain in any area of the breast, nipple discharge other than breast milk (including blood), and a new lump in the breast or underarm. If you have any signs that worry you, see your doctor right away.

"The observation started in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson and was expanded by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 to cover a 30-day period starting on September 15 and ending on October 15. It was enacted into law on August 17, 1988, on the approval of Public Law 100-402.

The day of September 15 is significant because it is the anniversary of independence for Latin American countries Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on September 16 and September18, respectively. Also, Columbus Day or Día de la Raza, which is October 12, falls within this 30 day period."

Banned Books Week brings together the entire book community; librarians, booksellers, publishers, journalists, teachers, and readers of all types, in shared support of the freedom to seek and to express ideas, even those some consider unorthodox or unpopular.

July 28th 2016 is the 10,000th day of the Web!

Background: On March 12, 1989 Tim Berners-Lee submitted a proposal for a distributed information system at CERN that later became what we know now as the World Wide Web. That makes this Thursday, July 28, the 10,000th day. (excerpt from the Thunderclap project)

HLC Library Solar Winner

EBSCO Information Services (EBSCO) is announcing the winner of its EBSCO Solar grant. Austin Community College (ACC) District’s Highland Campus Library in Austin, Texas has been selected as the winner of the grant which will cover up to $150,000 of the cost of installing a solar array. The grant will allow the Library to install solar panels and reduce its electricity expenditures.

National Nurses Week 2016

National Nurses Week begins each year on May 6 and ends on May 12, Florence Nightingale's birthday. These permanent dates enhance planning and position National Nurses Week as an established recognition event. As of 1998, May 8 was designated as National Student Nurses Day, to be celebrated annually. And as of 2003, National School Nurse Day is celebrated on the Wednesday within National Nurses Week each year.

What is it?
The new ACC Library BatLab is a pop-up makerspace for all ACC students, faculty and staff interested in doing hands-on, real-world, multidisciplinary projects in an informal, co-curricular setting.

Where is it?
The pop-up space is at the ACC Highland Library

Do I need to be proficient at building things?
No we will teach you what you need to know.  Attend some of our current workshops at ACC.  All workshops are free and last 2-3 hours. Check the BatLab calendar for the latest topics, dates, times, and campuses.

Intro to Arduino

No previous programming or electronics experience required!  In this intro-level workshop, attendees will learn how to use an Arduino microcontroller to respond to inputs (buttons, switches, sensors) and control simple outputs (LEDs, motors).  This workshop covers Arduino hardware, basics of C++ programming (variables, functions and control statements), digital and analog inputs and outputs.
