Early Voting for Dec 11th Runoff Starts

Early voting for the December 11th Runoff Election begins Thursday, November 29th, and runs through December 7th.  Election Day is December 11th. Polls will be open that day from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Please refer to the county links for polling places.

Austin Community College encourages students, faculty, and staff to vote in this important election. 

A runoff for ACC Board of Trustees Place 8 is on the ballot. Additional runoffs on the ballot include three City of Austin City Council districts and one Austin Independent School District slot.

Below are links to the county websites for information on voting locations and voting hours throughout the ACC service area for both the early-voting period and for Election Day.

Breast Cancer Awareness

Other than skin cancer, breast cancer is the most common cancer among American women.

Getting mammograms regularly can lower the risk of dying from breast cancer. The United States Preventive Services Task Force recommends that if you are 50 to 74 years old, be sure to have a screening mammogram every two years. If you are 40 to 49 years old, talk to your doctor about when to start and how often to get a screening mammogram.

Fast Facts About Breast Cancer

• Each year in the United States, about 237,000 cases of breast cancer are diagnosed in women and about 2,100 in men. About 41,000 women and 450 men in the U.S. die each year from breast cancer. 
• Over the last decade, the risk of getting breast cancer has not changed for women overall, but the risk has increased for black women and Asian and Pacific Islander women. Black women have a higher risk of death from breast cancer than white women.
• Men also get breast cancer, but it is not very common. Less than 1% of breast cancers occur in men. Men who get breast cancer are diagnosed usually between 60 and 70 years old.
• Most breast cancers are found in women who are 50 years old or older, but breast cancer also affects younger women. About 11% of all new cases of breast cancer in the United States are found in women younger than 45 years of age.

What Are the Symptoms?

There are different symptoms of breast cancer, and some people have no symptoms at all. Symptoms can include any change in the size or the shape of the breast, pain in any area of the breast, nipple discharge other than breast milk (including blood), and a new lump in the breast or underarm. If you have any signs that worry you, see your doctor right away.

World Mental Health Day - 10 October

World Mental Health Day is observed on 10 October every year, with the overall objective of raising awareness of mental health issues around the world and mobilizing efforts in support of mental health.

The Day provides an opportunity for all stakeholders working on mental health issues to talk about their work, and what more needs to be done to make mental health care a reality for people worldwide.

ACC Librarian Selected as SPARC Open Education Leadership Fellow

Library Services Faculty and Highland Campus, Head Librarian, Carrie Gits, has been selected as a fellow in the SPARC Open Education Leadership Program, an intensive professional development program to empower library professionals with the knowledge, skills, and connections to lead successful open education initiatives that benefit students. The two-semester program blends online, peer-to-peer, and project-based learning to build a comprehensive understanding of the open education space coupled with practical know-how to take action on campus and beyond. Carrie is one of 24 fellows selected from a competitive application pool for the program’s 2018-2019 cohort.

“I am so pleased that we have the opportunity to significantly enhance our pivotal role in leading the ACC OER initiative. Library Services is deeply committed to supporting open education at the college and believe that the SPARC Open Education Leadership Program is the premier environment for OER excellence in the country,” said Julie Todaro, Dean of Library Services.

The SPARC Open Education Leadership Program spans two semesters, beginning with an intensive online course in the fall to build comprehensive open education subject matter expertise. In the spring, Carrie will work with a mentor to implement a capstone project that will help advance open education at Austin Community College and contribute back to the broader open education community as a whole. Carrie will join the rest of the cohort in attending the 15th annual Open Education Conference in Niagara Falls, NY on October 10-12th.

“My goal for participating in the SPARC Open Education Leadership Program is to become a more effective and knowledgeable advocate for open education,” said Gits. “For my capstone project, I am particularly interested in creating a comprehensive training and development approach which supports faculty in their knowledge and understanding of OER. My hope is to increase awareness, adoption, adaption, and creation of OER which benefits pedagogy and the success of our students.”
ACC Libraries has been working to expand the use and adoption of online resources, open content and - specifically - open educational resources for several years. We participate in the ACC OER Work Group, launched a LibGuide on OER, and actively promote the College’s Textbook Heroes. Carrie has led the ACC faculty librarians in supporting classroom faculty who are using or interested in adopting OER in a variety of ways, such as resource discovery, vetting of material for appropriate copyright and licensing, and training.

“Academic libraries sit at the intersection of faculty, students, and high-quality resources, and therefore are essential partners in advancing open education on campus,” said Nicole Allen, Director of Open Education for SPARC. “A large part of what makes our program successful is the unique and valuable perspective each participant brings to it, and a vibrant community of practice develops amongst the cohort. We are proud to have Carrie among our 2018-2019 class of fellows.”

The Support Center Textbook Collection is a special collection of books purchased through a grant by the ACC Student Support Center to assist certain student groups* to gain access to required textbooks.

ONLY these special student groups* have access to the textbooks through the first week of classes.

After the first week of classes [starting the second week of classes], general credit students can checkout textbooks from this collection.

First Things First:

• No more textbook list! Instead we now have an enhanced feature which allows users to limit and search ONLY the Textbook Collection.

How to Search For Textbooks in the Textbook Collection: 

• Starting from the Library Catalog main search page...
• Use the drop down menu in the upper left. Select Textbook Collection. 
• Search by title, author, or ISBN 
• Remember students cannot request a hold for a textbook online or over the phone. All requests for textbooks must be done in person and initiated by library staff.
