Veteran-Friendly Library Services

Library Services has a representative serving on the ACC Veterans Outreach Committee (Sheila Henderson) and the mission of this Committee extends to Library Services. With Veterans Day being observed tomorrow, we would like to take this opportunity to outline some of our Veteran-Friendly Services. For starters, the Library Services Veterans Outreach member has a sticker on her door that indicates to our veteran students that inside that office they will find someone willing to help identify and serve their needs. If Library Services cannot help you, we will find a Veterans Resource person who can point you in the right direction.

What does Veteran-Friendly mean to us?

It means we will assist you in getting access to the College's textbook service. We will work with you and members of your family to meet your library and information needs. When we come to a classroom where you are a student, we will work to accommodate any special seating request you may have. It means we have time to hear your concerns and will work to address them to your satisfaction.

As the nation observes Veteran's Day on November 11th from "sea to shining sea" - we want you to know we are right here on every ACC campus. In the meantime, check out our Veterans Guide and our website. We're here to serve you.

Requesting a Library Item

Note: You cannot request textbooks from the Student Support Textbook Collection online.

Search the ACC Library Search Tool on the Library Homepage (https://library.austincc.edu) for the your topic.

After you have found the item you want, click on the title of the item .

On the next detail screen, you will see an option to “Request this copy” in the holdings grid. Click on the copy you want to request.

Login using your ACCeID and password. Other users, such as TexShare borrowers, use their ACC ID# or barcode, and their assigned password.

Choose the campus location where you plan to pickup your item. Click on the Request Item button.

After submitting the request, you will receive message whether the request is successful

 or not successful and why.

Note: When an item such as a Textbook is unavailable to be requested, a message like this one will appear.

NOTE on books/videos at other libraries: Items are pulled from shelves only once each morning (M-F). Campus mail delivery may take 4-7 days. If you require faster service -- or, if you have not heard from us within 10 days -- contact the library directly. Also note that items are not always returned by their due dates.  Items On Order will take longer.

NOTE on requesting books/videos that are checked out: Items are not always returned by their due dates. You will receive a message at your ACC email address when requested items are ready for pickup.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Breast Cancer Awareness

Other than skin cancer, breast cancer is the most common cancer among American women.

Getting mammograms regularly can lower the risk of dying from breast cancer. The United States Preventive Services Task Force recommends that if you are 50 to 74 years old, be sure to have a screening mammogram every two years. If you are 40 to 49 years old, talk to your doctor about when to start and how often to get a screening mammogram.

Fast Facts About Breast Cancer

• Each year in the United States, more than 200,000 women get breast cancer and more than 40,000 women die from the disease.
• Men also get breast cancer, but it is not very common. Less than 1% of breast cancers occur in men.
• Most breast cancers are found in women who are 50 years old or older, but breast cancer also affects younger women. About 11% of all new cases of breast cancer in the United States are found in women younger than 45 years of age.

What Are the Symptoms?

There are different symptoms of breast cancer, and some people have no symptoms at all. Symptoms can include any change in the size or the shape of the breast, pain in any area of the breast, nipple discharge other than breast milk (including blood), and a new lump in the breast or underarm. If you have any signs that worry you, see your doctor right away.

Hours of campus libraries are reduced between semesters and on holidays. Although between-semester and holiday hours are posted the week before/at the end of each semester; typically library hours change after the last day of the semester. In general, the only campus library open and offering full services between semesters is the Highland Campus Library.

My Library Account / Renew Library Items

Finding your library account:

You can easily find your library account by using the My Account link on the Library Home Page.

After clicking on a link, you will go to a page with a login box similar to this one.  You will need to login with your ACCeID and password. 

(Other library borrowers, use your ACC ID and password)

After successfully logging in, you can view your account.  You will be able to see any 

• items you have checked out
• books you have requested (holds)
• overdue fines and other fees 

Renewing items checked out:

If you click on the Checkouts tab, you will be able to renew any items listed there that are renewable. From the Checkout Policies for ACC Library Users page:

Renewal

• Reserve items and laptops cannot be renewed. Otherwise, in general, items may be renewed once as long as no one has placed a hold on the item. If an item must be returned because the renewals have been exhausted, then the patron must wait at least 24 hours before checking it out again.
• You may renew online, by phone, or in person. {Exception: Tablets have a 2-week loan period and can be renewed twice in-person (pending review of availability). After a checkout period, patrons must wait at least 24 hours in order to check out another tablet.}

FAQ: Finding Course Reserves Items

Finding Course Reserves Items

Search by exact title or use the specific search for Course Reserves on the Library Home page.

If you know the exact title of the reserve item, you can use the large search box at the top of the Library Home page.  If you prefer to search by Instructor, Course Name or Course ID, use the more specific search option for Course Reserves as indicated in the image below.

If you use the specific search, at the Course Reserves Screen, choose how you want to search for reserves:

Note the menu options at the Course Reserves screen, Course Name (e.g., Art History) Course ID (e.g., ARTS 1303) Instructor Name (e.g., Schele, Elaine)

	When you search for any course name, course ID or instructor name, you will access an alphabetic list to choose from. In this example, we searched for the course ID art 1303.
After you choose the course (ARTS 1303), you will see a list of the the instructors who have placed items on Reserve for that course.
Once you choose the instructor, you will see a list of items the instructor has placed on Reserve. Click on a title to see more information, such as The loan period. The campus where you can check it out.
Items are placed on Course Reserves by instructors for limited loan periods.  Please note that in this example, the item has a loan period of two (2) hours and must be returned to the Checkout Desk after that time. Read Across Texas: The Veteran Experience

ACC Library Services is excited to participate in Read Across Texas: The Veteran Experience, a statewide reading program sponsored by the Texas Center for the Book. Read Across Texas encourages communities to engage in tough but important conversations that surround the story of those who have bravely served our country and about what happens when these veterans come home.

The first program is scheduled for Friday, February 10, 2017, 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.

ACC Library Services has Mark Harden of the ACC Veteran Resource Center and Brad Robichaux of ACC’s Department of Veteran Affairs as veteran partners and the Round Rock Public Library as a community partner. Together we are planning opportunities for these special conversations to take place; resources have been identified by the Center for the Book to help facilitate these important discussions.

The first program is scheduled for Friday, February 10, 2017, 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m., in the Veterans Resource Center, located at 6001 Airport Blvd. in Austin, Texas, adjacent to the ACC Highland Campus. We will be reading and discussing Mark Harden’s book, Losing Mogadishu, with commentaries from Brad Robichaux and other veteran attendees. The second book to be discussed will be Ben Fountain’s Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk.

ACC Library Services has enlisted the assistance of Kori Jones, who teaches veterans and their families deep breathing relaxation exercises as a good way of relaxing when feeling stressed or panicked. We also plan to have an ACC counselor sharing in this experience. In this collaborative effort to bridge years of mystery surrounding the veteran experience, and to combat misunderstandings and misconceptions, we invite and encourage participation by faculty, staff, and students of ACC and community members.
