October 2013 Information Literacy Awareness Month

Information Literacy Supporter BadgeJoin Governor Rick Perry and Texas Libraries for Information Literacy Awareness Month.

"... simply having access to information is not enough.  We must also know what it means and how to use it. The ability to search for, understand, analyze, evaluate and synthesize different forms of information is crucial to effective decision-making.  We must ensure that Texans of all ages are equipped with the tools and skills to use information resources to think critically and creatively....

At this time, I encourage all Texans to recognize information literacy's role in our businesses, education, health care, defense, government, economic prosperity and quality of life."

National Voter Registration Day - 24 Sep 2013

Q: What is National Voter Registration Day?
"In 2008, 6 million Americans did not vote because they did not know how to register or they missed their state's voter registration deadline, according to the US Census. In 2013, we want to make sure no American is left out.

On September 24, 2013, volunteers, celebrities, and organizations from all over the country will "hit the streets" for National Voter Registration Day. This single day of coordinated volunteer, technology and media efforts will create widespread awareness of voter registration opportunities--allowing us to reach tens of thousands of voters or more who we could not reach otherwise." Don't Leave Your Belongings Unattended

Don't leave your belongings unattended in the libraries

Unattended laptops, cell phones, iPods, calculators, text books, and wallets (whether in or out of a bag/backpack) attract thieves. Please do not step away from your valuables, even for short excursions to the copier, printer, or restroom. Instead, pack up and take your belongings with you or have a friend watch them in your absence.
Belongings left unattended may be taken to
the Campus Police Office for security purposes.
Note: Thanks to Lafayette College Library for some of this wording. Thievery is not limited to one college or one place. Be alert in public places.

Computer Sign-In Pilot at ACC Libraries

ACCeIDStarting March 2013,  Library Services began implementing a pilot to provide more equitable access to library computers by having library patrons use a log on.  You may need your ACCeID and password to log into a computer in the Library or Computer Center. See more information and help.

The Riverside Campus Library is spear-heading the pilot which requires ACC students and employees to log on with their ACCeID and password just as all students and faculty do in Blackboard. Other campus libraries will gradually implement sign in during Spring 2013. All ACC campus libraries will have sign in by the end of May 2013.

Note: Log on is also required by any visitors to the library. The visitors must sign in at the reference desk and have the reference librarians assist them with logging on to the library computers designated for visitors. Be aware that students are given priority on any library computer not being used at the moment.
