Todaro elected ACRL vice president/president-elect

CHICAGO - Julie Todaro, dean of library services for Austin Community College, was elected vice president/president-elect of the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL). She will assume office following the 2006 American Library Association (ALA) Annual Conference in New Orleans.

Todaro plans to focus her 2007-2008 presidential year on continuing to make ACRL the premier "virtual, digital and in-person" professional association for academic library professionals; positioning academic library professionals for maximum impact within higher education environments; expanding external partnerships to advance library and information goals within higher education and other association and organization environments; and continuing a focus on public policy as it pertains to information, research and higher education and related issues.

"I am honored to be elected to serve as ACRL's vice-president/president-elect," said Todaro. "We live in exciting and challenging times in library and information environments and although my temptation is to attempt to address all of the needs articulated in ACRL's strategic plan, I will be working in the next few months to narrow down my focus to more clearly set an agenda that builds on past presidential leadership."

Todaro has held numerous positions in ALA and ACRL. She served on the National Conference Invited Papers Subcommittee and was co-chair of the Institute for Information Literacy. Currently, she is serving as a member of the Grassroots Library Advocacy Presidential Task Force and the C&RL News Editorial Board. She also has served as chair for the Council of Liaisons.

"ACRL is delighted to have Todaro on the board as vice-president/president-elect," ACRL Executive Director Mary Ellen Davis said. "Her advocacy skills and her success in working with higher education organizations will be invaluable to ACRL as it continues to implement its strategic plan."

Todaro also has been active in state and regional associations. She is past president of the Texas Library Association. She was chair of the Texas Library Association's Legislative Committee, chair of the College and University Library Division, a member of Tall Texans Leadership Committee on Implementation, and chair of the President's Committee on Committees.

Her publications include "The Truth is Out There," a quarterly column in Library Administration & Management; "Nothing But Net," in Community and Junior College Libraries; and a forthcoming July 2006 Monograph for Neal-Schuman, Inc. with Mark Smith entitled "Training Library Staff and Volunteers to Provide Extraordinary Customer Service."

Prior to serving as Dean of Library Services for Austin Community College, Todaro was the Head Librarian at the Rio Grande Campus of Austin Community College from 1984-2001. Todaro received her doctorate of library science from Columbia University, School of Library Service, and her master's of library science from the University of Texas at Austin, School of Information.

ACRL is a division of the American Library Association (ALA), representing more than 13,000 academic and research librarians and interested individuals. ACRL is the only individual membership organization in North America that develops programs, products and services to meet the unique needs of academic and research librarians. Its initiatives enable the higher education community to understand the role that academic libraries play in the teaching, learning and research environments.

Event Description
The Inca Trail: Qhapaq Nan, El Gran amino Inca, is coming to ACC after a prominent viewing at El Museo de Las Americas in San Juan, Puerto Rico.


A traveling exhibit opening Sunday at ACC offers a glimpse of the short-lived Inca Empire (1438-1532) through photographs taken along El Gran Camino Inca, the 500-year-old, 4,500-mile highway that served as the economic lifeline for the empire.

The show marks the U.S. debut of the exhibit and its only stop in Texas.

The 80 photos on loan from the Peruvian Consulate in Houston to ACC's Latin American Studies Center depict the past (fortresses and suspension bridges) and the present (modern day Inca descendants tending llamas and selling food along the dirt trail). The trail follows the spine of the Andes Mountains from southern Colombia to central Chile.

Knovel University Challenge -Video iPod Contest

Announcing the 'Knovel University Challenge' - Video iPod Contest for Students

Starting April 19th, Knovel is launching the Knovel University Challenge, a contest open to students enrolled in any college or university with an active subscription to the Knovel Library service. The contest is also open to students from institutions with trial access to Knovel Library, as well as students from institutions with free K-Essentials access. The contest runs until May 31st.

The Knovel University Challenge gives students hands-on experience with the features that are exclusive to the Knovel platform, and offers a great incentive for taking the Challenge--the chance to win one of four 30 GB Video Apple iPods! The Challenge is a 5-question multiple-choice quiz requiring students to use Knovel Library to correctly answer each question. All entries with correct responses will be entered into a drawing for a free 30 GB Apple Video iPod.
