ACC Library Services is excited to be participating in the American Library Association’s latest campaign, Libraries Transform. Transformation is essential to the communities we serve!

 The goal of Libraries Transform is to increase public awareness of the value, impact, and services provided by libraries and library professionals of all types. Libraries transform both communities and the lives of individuals
Libraries continue to transform to meet rapidly changing 21st century needs and Library professionals continue to transform to meet the evolving needs of the communities in which they serve.

 Libraries Transform wants you to understand that “libraries are NOT obsolete or nice to have” rather “libraries are essential” to your work and what you do ...not just at school but at home!

In a story in the NY Times, Sari Feldman, president of the American Library Association, disscusses how story time transforms lives. "... such early-literacy efforts are part of a larger transformation libraries are undergoing to become active learning centers for their communities by offering services like classes in English as a second language, computer skills and career counseling."
   We want you to notice we ARE NOT "just quiet places to do research, find a book and read” but instead come in and try out our unique pathways into the Internet AND our hundred + expert websites and databases of information we have subscribed to just to help you do write that paper, answer those chemistry questions or find that haunted house tour your history teacher wants you to take!!

National Lifelong Learning Day

National Lifelong Learning Day 15 October 2015

Lifelong Learning Day is an official national day of recognition with a congressional proclamation. Senator Edward Markey (D-MA) and Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker have both signed proclamations that recognize the importance of this special day.

Kanopy is a streaming video platform of over 26,000 titles from over 800 producers. Now, for the first time ever, we have access to streaming film titles from the Criterion Collection, festival documentaries, and TV producers (like HBO).

Wanna stream Grey Gardens? A Hard Day's Night? The Battle of Algiers? You can now. All videos are closed-captioned, shareable, and embed-able.

Research Success Tutorials - Primo Site of the Month

The Peer-Reviewed Instructional Materials Online (PRIMO) Committee of the Instruction Section of ACRL is pleased to announce that a new Site of the Month interview has been posted to our committee website.

ACC Library Services Research Success Tutorial Suite is a collection of bite-sized, interactive tutorials designed to provide students at Austin Community College with an introduction to essential information literacy concepts. Each tutorial includes practice activities and a built-in assessment in the form of a printable, multiple choice quiz which students may turn in for credit.

National Nurses Week, 6-12 May 2015

The National Nurses Week starts on May 6th (or the National Nurses Day) and ends on May 12th which is the birth date of Florence Nightingale.  excerpt from 5 Fun Facts About the National Nurses Week

• In the 1950’s, National Nurses Week was first observed from October 11 – 16. 
• It was President Nixon who proclaimed a “National Nurse Week” in 1974. 
• The idea of making May 6th as the “National Recognition Day for Nurses” was first proposed by a group of nurses from Mexico. The proposal was signed by President Ronald Reagan and was later expanded into a week-long celebration (May 6-12) by the American Nurses Association’s Board of Directors in 1990. 
• The International Nurses Day is celebrated every May 12th of each year

Earth Day - April 22

Join others at ACC to celebrate Earth Day.  ACC Earth Week 2015

"Earth Day is an annual event, celebrated on April 22, on which day events worldwide are held to demonstrate support for environmental protection. It was first celebrated in 1970, and is now coordinated globally by the Earth Day Network, and celebrated in more than 192 countries each year.

In 1969 at a UNESCO Conference in San Francisco, peace activist John McConnell proposed a day to honor the Earth and the concept of peace, to first be celebrated on March 21, 1970, the first day of spring in the northern hemisphere. This day of nature's equipoise was later sanctioned in a Proclamation written by McConnell and signed by Secretary General U Thant at the United Nations. A month later a separate Earth Day was founded by United States Senator Gaylord Nelson as an environmental teach-in first held on April 22, 1970. Nelson was later awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom Award in recognition of his work."

Women's Health Care Month

March is Women's Health Care Month

She's your friend, sister, wife, mother, daughter, neighbor, or co-worker, and she has a story to tell. March is National Women's History Month and the 2015 theme is Weaving the Stories of Women's Lives. [See more at the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention CDC Women's Health website.] It features an A-Z Topics section, Women’s Health Initiatives, a section on Healthy Living, and also has lots of statistical information, as you would expect from the CDC.

Two other helpful sites for issues related to women's health are:

ACC library’s exemplary online tutorials key to research success

 The Austin Community College District’s (ACC) Library Services is receiving national recognition from the American Library Association (ALA) for its new online tutorials as an outstanding example of information literacy online instruction. It was hard to decide what to include--100 years is a long time and a lot has happened during this period. 

We decided to focus on achievements and positive events and to include as many black Texans and local people as we could find.  Naturally, in this selection, many people and events were omitted.  We hope this display will encourage others to research black history to discover what we left out.
